The video game industry is a competitive one, especially since there are so many titles and franchises now fighting for the top spot. There are many developer companies in the ring, but CD Projekt Red is winning as The Witcher franchise takes first place.
Among Top-Selling Video Game Franchise
The Witcher franchise had just surpassed many of the biggest game titles and franchises to date as it boasts 75 million copies sold in total. What's more impressive is that 50 million of those copies are from its latest game alone, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
This beats other famous titles in the video game market such as Red Dead Redemption 2, which has sold over 53 million copies, or the 2018 Spider-Man release which sold over 33 million copies overall.
Since CD Projekt Red has more upcoming projects, those numbers might increase. According to The Verge, the developers of the game have more titles in line for the franchise, as well as the remake of the first Witcher game.
If reports are to be believed, CDPR is also working on an entirely new trilogy also relating to the Witcher lore. If so, then we might see a new Witcher as a main character, or perhaps it will center on Ciri as the protagonist.
The series based on the same book the game was adapted from is also set to be released this June 29th, which also happens to be the last season where Henry Cavill will be playing Geralt and will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth.
If the third season is a success as well as the proceeding seasons with the new actor as it is renewed for two more seasons, The Witcher fans may be more inclined to purchase a copy of the game, driving up sales even more.
The New Witcher Trilogy
The franchise's fans are looking forward to the release of the fourth game, not only because they are excited to see what the game can offer them, but because it also serves as the beginning of the trilogy that will be released by the developers.
According to PC Gamer, the three games after the fourth one will be released within a six-year period, so we might be seeing two-year waits between each one if the reports are accurate. Although, it might still be a while before we see the 4th Witcher game.
It has only begun pre-production around the middle of 2022, so we might see the game's release in 2024, hopefully early. Since CDPR said that they will release a trailer close to the release, we can use trailers as a sign that the launch of the game is near.
As for what you can expect for The Witcher 4, it's likely that you will be seeing Ciri there still, whether she'll be a playable character or not is still unclear, but CDPR did state that it could be "something we'll get to revisit in the future," so all we can do now is hope that he will.
