WhatsApp To Add Meta Quest Compatibility As Linked Device

WhatsApp is coming to Meta's VR headsets.

Meta and WhatsApp are working on making the popular secure messaging app have the software it needs to connect it to a Meta Quest VR headset as a linked device.

As with recent WhatsApp features, WhatsApp's Meta Quest compatibility is still under development and will be available to the app at a later date.

WhatsApp Meta Quest Compatibility Details

Meta has been working on making WhatsApp accessible to its wearable tech as of late. You may recall that company CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously announced that Meta's Ray-Ban Stories Smart Glasses could make calls, hear message readouts, and send end-to-end encrypted messages with WhatsApp.

Now, WABetaInfo reportedly found a feature that allows WhatsApp to connect to a Meta Quest VR headset as a linked device and allows it to do the same as a pair of Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses, thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.13.6, which is now available on the Google Play Store.

Thanks to the upcoming feature, it is now possible to link an existing WhatsApp account to a Meta Quest headset natively - a welcome thought considering that Meta recently announced it is dropping the price of its upcoming VR headset, the Meta Quest 3.

As a result, it will soon be possible for Meta Quest users to use WhatsApp through their VR headsets to make and receive calls, hear message readouts, and send and receive encrypted messages to and from other people, though whether communications will be protected by end-to-end encryption, similarly to Ray-Ban Stories, is still unclear as of press time.

However, this feature is still under development, and as such, it is impossible to connect WhatsApp to Meta Quest officially. Some details also remain unclear, such as how the connection between an existing WhatsApp account and a Meta Quest VR headset will take place and information regarding the compatibility.

Additionally, beta testers don't have access to the upcoming feature as of press time due to its development status, though it is expected that WhatsApp will allow them to access it when it worked on it more.

Other Upcoming WhatsApp Features

WhatsApp has been a busy bee when it comes to developing new features for its app aside from the Meta Quest compatibility feature. You may recall that the company is allegedly working on adding support for multi-account functionality to the app in a future update, allowing WhatsApp users to connect multiple accounts to a single app.

WABetaInfo also spotted the company to be testing WhatsApp's screen-sharing feature, along with a Bottom Navigation Bar for Android WhatsApp users, which makes navigating app similar to its iOS version.

Furthermore, the company is working on adding animated emojis and a self-destructing option for group chats soon, along with a bunch more features still under development as of press time. These features may soon be available on the app in future updates if everything goes as WhatsApp plans.
