AI.com Now Leads to Elon Musk’s xAI Site Instead of ChatGPT

With AI being one of the fast-growing trends in the tech sector, AI.com is a coveted domain. At first, ChatGPT held the web address, although it looks like Musk got it for himself as it now directs to his AI company called xAI's website.

ChatGPT to xAI

Back in February, typing in AI.com would lead you to ChatGPT's web interface. It's a smart move, especially since it's the easiest domain to remember when one wants to use AI tools like chatbots or AI-powered generators. In this case, they were led to OpenAI's chatbot.

However, that's no longer the case. Elon Musk presumably bought the domain himself as AI.com now leads a welcome page for xAI. There's nothing worth noting about the change since there's nothing to see in Musk's AI site yet, but then there's the price of the domain itself.

Other than the fact that the AI domain is something a lot of AI companies want for themselves, two-letter domains are also rare and vastly expensive, as mentioned in Tech Crunch. Considering the hype with AI right now, it's another factor that adds to its value.

By comparison, IT.com was sold for $3.8 million last year, and AI.com is expected to have cost way more than that. This could mean that Musk has something planned for his AI company. That, or he just wants to domain for himself, which is not at all uncharacteristic.

Either way, it's not exactly a huge loss for OpenAI. The company has already established the name of its chatbot even without the perk of having a general domain like AI.com. If anything, there's probably a very small number of people who would search for AI.com.

Musk, on the other hand, could use the extra lost searchers, especially since xAI still has a long way to go before it is recognized as one of the big players in the AI market. Only time and statistics would tell if the millions spent on it will be worth it.

What Are Musk's Plans for xAI?

Back in July, Musk announced that his AI company will be collaborating with his other companies, namely Tesla and X (formerly Twitter). The tech billionaire intends to use it on the "silicon front" and the "AI software front."

It was mentioned during a live audio session on the microblogging platform. Musk mentioned that xAI will be trained using X data for "maximally curious" artificial intelligence systems, as mentioned in CNBC.

In case you don't know, the company implemented a few policies in response to the allegations of other AI companies scraping data from X to train their models. This resulted in users getting a limited number of posts they can view per day.

Given the assumption that other AI companies are doing it, Musk says that they will be using public tweets to train their AI as everyone has. But unlike the others, he will be scraping data from his own platform.
