The Witcher 3: Who/What is Gaunter O'Dimm?

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has a lot of interesting characters with stories that go back to the previous games. One in particular is quite new, yet proves to be more interesting than most. Gaunter O'Dimm is a powerful character in The Witcher Universe, yet no one really knows what he is.

Who is Gaunter O'Dimm in the Game?

You'll come across the character in the base game as Geralt looks for Yennefer. He introduces himself as a merchant, Master Mirror, and Man of Glass. He makes pacts with people to grant them their desires in exchange for their souls. Sounds familiar?

You'll only meet him briefly in the White Orchard Inn to give you advice so you can find Yennefer, which leads you to the Nilfgaardian Garrison. You won't really see much of him after that, that is until you start the Heart of Stone DLC.

He'll only appear again once Geralt is captured and jailed in a ship on its way to Ofier, which happens after taking Olgierd von Everec's contract and killing the monstrous toad in the sewers who turns out to be an Ofieri prince.

O'Dimm offers to help Geralt in exchange for a small favor. Not seeing another way out, Geralt accepts, earning him the brand at the side of his face which Gaunter O'Dimm would remove after he had fulfilled his task.

In the entirety of the DLC, it becomes more and more clear to Geralt just how powerful the mysterious fellow is. Still, it was not stated in the game what or who he actually was, though a lot of people have theories.

Theories About O'Dimm

Geralt himself is considering that Gaunter O'Dimm might've been a demon or a djinn, considering how powerful he was. Things were made more clear for players when Geralt talks to Professor Shakeslock, who researches about O'Dimm at the behest of Olgierd.

In a cut scene, the professor explained that there have been records of his presence that dates back thousands of years and that he went by many names in various cultures. Ultimately, Shakeslock called him "Evil Incarnate."

Based on his actions and the way he interacts with people, he sounds a lot like the Christian version of the devil. He grants wishes in exchange for one's soul, and people are generally screwed over once they get what they want.

Gaunter O'Dimm explained that he was not evil and he was only giving people exactly what they wish for. In a way, he reflects what people really are, which aligns with his alias, Master Mirror. Then again, his actions showed otherwise.

There is a scene where Geralt meant to speak to O'Dimm but was interrupted by a drunk. The latter then stopped time, yet again showing just how powerful he was. After speaking to Geralt, he proceeded to shove a spoon in the drunk's eyes just for interrupting, which looks a lot like being evil.

A fan once pointed out that the initials of his name spelled out GOD. It's not that far-fetched for The Witcher Universe to have a cruel god. He might not even be the only god, just a mischievous one like Norse mythology's Loki.

If Geralt chooses to help Olgierd in the final stand, he will be sent to what looks like a darker world where O'Dimm was in control, also showing a different and more devilish face. After defeating him, O'Dimm says that he cannot be killed and that he will be back.

With that, it can be assumed that he was not killable because he wasn't necessarily a mortal being, which makes him more powerful than almost all the characters in the game. He was defeated by Geralt, true, but one's not really defeated if he can still come back.
