iPhone 15 USB-C Cable Transfer Speed Possibly Limited

Apple won't give up its Lightning cable and port.

The new leak about the tech giant's upcoming iPhone 15 revealed that the USB-C cable that comes with the unit will not be as capable as its Lightning cable and port.

Apple was forced to switch to USB-C for its cable and port after the EU mandated that all tech companies must use USB-C to reduce electronic waste.

Apple's Lightning Strikes

Apple is just a few days away from announcing its iPhone 15 to the public, but the leaks about the phone keep on coming. According to a 9to5Mac report, a researcher going by the handle "Majin Bu" leaked more details about the iPhone 15's USB-C cable that some could find upsetting.

According to the researcher's post on X.com/Twitter, every iPhone 15 purchase will come with a free USB-C cable since the device will feature a USB-C port instead of Apple's proprietary Lightning cable and port. The USB-C cables that come with the device will be braided and 1.5 meters long, forcing Apple to redesign the interior packaging for the iPhone 15 to accommodate the new accessory.

Majin Bu isn't the only researcher who shared this leak with the public. A report from Apple Insider stated that KosutamiSan, a fellow researcher, also revealed the same thing on X.com/Twitter.

However, there is one big difference between the information the two researchers shared. Majin Bu stated in his post that while Apple will provide a long USB-C cable, it will not be as capable as its Lightning one.

According to the researcher, the USB-C cable that the iPhone 15 will come with will only have the same transfer speed as a USB 2.0. For those unaware, a USB-C cable has a transfer speed of 480 Mbps, while a USB-C cable, has a transfer speed of up to 40 Gbps, per Yuga Tech.

Why Apple would want to provide a longer but slower USB-C cable is unclear.

Sheep Or Goat?

Nevertheless, Majin Bu's revelation somewhat goes against Ming-Chi Kuo's report that the iPhone 15, specifically its Pro models, will feature high-speed data transfers thanks to its USB-C cable and port.

Kuo, whose leaks have been reliable, stated that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to feature at least USB-C 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3 data transfer speeds. If Majin Bu and Kuo are telling the truth, the standard iPhone 15 models may get a slower transfer speed because of its USB-C cable. Meanwhile, its Pro models will get the allegedly faster one.

Apple did something similar with its iPhone 14 models before it released it. You may remember that the Pro iPhone 14 models would only get Apple's A16 chip, while its standard models will get the company's A15 chip - the same one featured in an iPhone 13.

Apple allegedly did so because of the ongoing global semiconductor shortage at the time, forcing Apple to dedicate its entire supply chain to producing the more expensive iPhone 14 models.
