Cat-Centric Adventure Game Stray is Getting an Animated Adaptation

Annapurna had the right idea about creating Stray, especially since almost everyone enjoys cat-related content. The adventure game was a wholesome experience for those who played it, and even for those who haven't, they will experience the post-apocalyptic cyberpunk world as the game is being adapted into a movie.

Players of Stray got to live the life of a cat navigating through a forgotten city full of humanoid robots who were left after everyone had gone. Despite the interactions being limited to machines and sometimes monsters, the game still found a way to make it feel warm.

Staying true to the atmosphere of Stray, the movie adaptation will be animated, and it will be done by no other than its publisher Annapurna. The company's Animation Head Robert Baird claims that it will be the "greatest hopepunk movie that's ever been made."

As mentioned in Engadget, Baird explains "hopepunk" as a narrative concept that holds optimism to resist tyranny. Other than the littered and neglected streets of the dark cyberpunk landscape, we can expect the feline protagonist to also traipse through rooftops.

The good news is that Baird has confirmed that B-12 will be part of the movie. In case you don't know or remember, B-12 is the cat's flying robot companion throughout most of the game, giving out instructions, guidance, and hints to the player.

Annapurna's Head of Animation calls the pairing a "buddy comedy about a cat and a robot" which could be a "hilarious dynamic." Although, unlike the game where B-12 makes captioned but random robot sounds, he might actually speak for the audience to understand.

The same could also go for the humanoid robots that the cat interacts with throughout the film, but that remains to be seen. The timetable is still unknown, but Baird did say that the film is already in active development, so we might see it sooner rather than later.

Game to Movie Adaptations to Watch

Since we don't have a definite release date yet, all we can do is pass the time and wait for more news. To do that, you can look into other adaptations from games, especially since a lot has been released and there is no shortage of them.

One of the good ones is "The Last of US" on Max based on the video game with the same title, which narrates the story of Joel and Ellie, also in a post-apocalyptic world. Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the show also follows the narrative of the video game.

There's also "Arcane" on Netflix, which is based on the MOBA video game League of Legends by Riot Games. The show revolved around the backstories of a few playable characters such as Jinx, Vi, Caitlyn, Jayce, Viktor, Heimerdinger, and more.

If all you need is a quick fix of video game to movie adaptation, you may also look into "Assassin's Creed." Although fans of the Assassin's Creed franchise were disappointed with the movie, you might find yourself liking it.
