X, formerly and still known by many as Twitter, has been doing well on the creator compensation front. The company said that it would share company ad revenue with certain creators who meet the criteria, and the X CEO says that it has already disbursed millions.
Sharing Ad Sales
Despite X's previous financial troubles, it still managed to create a payment program for creators with posts that contain ads. According to X CEO Linda Yaccarino, the social media company has already given out almost $20 million to creators.
The first time that participants earned their due was back in July. In a five-month period prior, Musk claims that around $5 million has already been given out. If that's so, then $15 million has already been disbursed in a two-month period, according to Tech Crunch.
This is a good trajectory for content creation in the platform, especially since it's not exactly the go-to social networking site when a creator wants to earn. Mostly, people still opt for YouTube, TikTok, Twitch, Facebook, and other sites.
There is still a setback that puts X behind other platforms that allow creators to earn. For example, the user will have to subscribe to X Premium first before they are eligible for the program, so they will have to pay first to get paid, which is not the case for others.
The rest of the requirements are pretty standard to make sure that the ads actually do get exposure. The user's account will need to have at least 500 followers first, along with five million post impressions in the span of three months.
Once that's all achieved, ads will appear in the reply threads of eligible users. Some content creators claim that they have already gotten compensation from the company. Certain accounts say they received $2,200 with others claiming they received up to $24,000.
Is X Out of the Woods?
Not yet. The company has yet to address several issues such as bots and survive whatever impulsive decision Elon Musk makes next. Just recently, the X owner suggested that the platform might be placed behind a paywall in an attempt to solve the bots problem.
He said that they are "moving to have a small monthly payment for the use of the system." Musk had the same goal with X Blue, but since bots are still rampant on the social media site, the solution left to do might be charging everyone.
Musk said that bots cost "a fraction of a penny" to make, and if someone has to pay "a few dollars or something, some minor amount," then it would cost more to create bot accounts. On the bright side, the X owner says that it will just be a small amount of money, as per BBC.
The price would just have to be high enough to cost more than a bot account. Regardless, the site being behind a paywall alone might be enough for users to quit X altogether. A lot are already unhappy about several changes and having to pay could be the last straw.
