Meta submitted a proposal to implement a monthly ad-free payment for Europeans amid the European Union's limiting Meta to utilize its users' digital activity for targeted ads.
Meta Wants to Charge at Least $14 a Month
During the series of meetings between the privacy regulators of Ireland and digital competition regulators in Brussels, Meta shared its detailed intention to implement a subscription no ads (SNA) for European users.
The SNA will give users a choice to either access Instagram and Facebook for free with personalized ads or to pay for the same services without the risk of Meta using their Digita footprint for ads. According to the plan, Meta is planning to charge $10.50 (€10) on Facebook or Instagram accounts on desktop. However, mobile devices can get as high as $14 (€13) as Meta still has to pay commissions to Apple and Google.
The Wall Street Journal clarified that users from the U.S. won't have to be worried for now as the ad-free versions were made specifically to fit the demands of the EU regulators.
Meta's Principle on Free Service
In 2018, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained that Meta's core lies in giving free services with support from advertising. The company puts emphasis on making its services available to people of all income levels.
On the other hand, Meta has already started bringing paid services with its paid-user verification services. Regardless, its basic and core functions remain free for all. However, Meta spokesperson stated that the company is already seeking ways to ensure that they will comply with the evolving regulatory requirements.
