For those who feel like they need more of the Cyberpunk 2077 universe after the Phantom Liberty expansion, CD Projekt Red brings good news as they are officially working on a live-action adaptation based on the game.
CD Projekt Red x Anonymous Content
Cyberpunk 2077 has created a whole new universe with its own system and slang, which gives it the potential to create more content in the future, and that's exactly what CD Projekt Red has set out to do. In partnership with Anonymous Content, CDPR is onto another project.
While it's still in its early stages, things are already looking good for adaptation. In case you don't know, Anonymous Content is behind many award-winning shows like "True Detective" and "Mr. Robot," as well as movies like "The Revenant" and "Spotlight."
The people involved in the production are film and TV show veterans. Aside from Anonymous Content's Head of Television Garret Kemble and Director of Development Ryan Schwartz, Chief Creative Officer David Levine.
Levine has been involved in shows that you've probably seen or heard of. As the former EVP and Co-head of Drama from HBO, he has worked on titles like "Westworld," "True Blood," and the early seasons of "Game of Thrones," accoridng to CDPR's blog post.
The team is already looking for a screenwriter who would bring the loud and crime-rampant streets of Night City to life. That means that there will be a new story taking place and, therefore new content for the game's fans.
AC Studios will be the studio for the project and the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team will be heavily involved. While it was not stated whether it would be a movie or a TV show, the people working on the project suggested that it could be a series adaptation.
Since only a few details have been revealed such as the people working on the project and that a new story will be written for it, there's no estimated year much less a date for when the TV show or movie will hit the screens.
Cyberpunk 2077 Did Well with Edgerunners
In case you haven't heard about "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners," it's an anime series based on the Cyberpunk 2077 universe on Netflix. In collaboration with Studio Trigger, CDPR boasts of the show winning several awards.
It tells the story of a boy from Santo Domingo, David Martinez, trying to make it in a corrupt city controlled by corporation giants like Arasaka. After losing his mother, he went on to join a group of mercenaries headed by Maine.
Fans of the game were even treated with "Edgerunner" references added in the game later on such as David Martinez's jacket and a mini-side quest. The 2.0 update also shows recognizable characters in the perks system such as David and Rebecca.
If things go as well as they did with the anime series, then the live adaptation would be a hit. It's also quite possible given that the collaboration brings in people who have already proven their capabilities, whether it's CDPR's creative team or AC Studio's industry veterans.
