Public Instagram Reels can now be downloaded by anyone with the feature finally available worldwide.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced all users can now download public Reels to their devices for offline viewing. Downloadable Reels were previously limited to US users in June.
Downloaded Reels will have the platform's watermark with an account name as it did with TikTok videos.
However, Reels with only original audio tracks will have sound when downloaded. Clips with licensed audio will have no audio at all when downloaded.
How to Download Instagram Reels
Accounts will have the option to switch their Reels' availability for downloading. This can be done by going to Settings and selecting the Privacy option.
There, the Reels and Remix section can be seen with the new feature. Tap on the "Allow people to download your Reels" toggle.
Private accounts will have no worries about having their stories out to the masses as the feature is only available to public accounts.
To download others' Reels, simply press the Share icon in the selected Reel. Look for the Download option in the pop-up menu and click it.
The Reels are now saved to Instagram's folder on the device.
Instagram users below 18 will have their Reels download option turned off at default, but can be switched on anytime.
Cross-Platform Possibilities
Downloadable Reels is Meta's latest strategy to boost the feature's visibility to the public.
Instagram Reels already appear on Facebook feeds prior to the announcement in order to reach a greater audience.
Videos migrating from other platforms, however, is a different story.
Since 2021, Instagram has stopped recommending clips with TikTok or YouTube Shorts watermarks on its For You page.
Several creators bypass this restriction by simply uploading the raw content again and linking their TikTok accounts to the post.
