Google launched the largest and most capable AI model the company has ever built, Gemini, which comes in three different sizes: Ultra, Pro, and Nano.
Google's Gemini to Compete With OpenAI's Dominance
According to Google Deepmind, Gemini is the first model that can outperform human experts on Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU). Moreover, the company's data showed that Gemini Ultra is more effective in MMLU and multi-step reasoning compared to GPT-4.
The AI model comes in three different sizes such as Ultra which is appropriate for highly complex tasks, Pro for scaling across a wide range of tasks, and Nano for on-device tasks. Gemini is capable of understanding and operating different types of information such as text, code, audio, image, and video.
"This is incredible momentum, and yet, we're only beginning to scratch the surface of what's possible," Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis shared in a press release.
Google Gemini Availability
The company is gearing up to roll out Gemini to customers via Google Cloud. Developers and Enterprise will be able to access the Pro version through the Gemini API in Google AI Studio or Google Cloud Vertex AI, starting December 13.
Meanwhile, Android developers can start building using the Gemini Nano via AICore, a new system that is available in Android 14 and Pixel 8 Pro devices. Interested developers are encouraged to sign up for an early preview of the AICore.
As for the Gemini Ultra, Google is still in the process of doing safety checks before opening its access. The Ultra version will only be available to select customers, developers, experts, and partners for early testing and feedback before it rolls out next year.
"We're excited by the amazing possibilities of a world responsibly empowered by AI - a future of innovation that will enhance creativity, extend knowledge, advance science, and transform the way billions of people live and work around the world," Google wrote.
