If you think that your internet connection is still not fast enough, maybe you'd be interested in upgrading to a 20Gbps plan that Google Fiber intends to offer. That is more than enough to have over a hundred TVs streaming and a hundred more PCs playing online games without lag, but you'll have to pony up $250 for the service.
Google Fiber's 20Gbps Internet
Internet service providers are upgrading their offers for internet speeds, before Google Fiber's 20Gpbs Wi-Fi 7 Fiber plan, there were already available plans that offer up to 8Gbps, which is more than enough for a busy household.
For such speeds, you'll also have to match the price, which costs you $250 apart from taxes and other fees. Unfortunately, even if you do have the money to pay the charge every month, your area might not have access to it just yet.
The latest Google Fiber plan will start off in select areas such as Kansas City, North Carolina's Triangle Region, Arizona, and Iowa, as reported by Engadget. The company will eventually release them in other locations, although there's no definite window for that.
The beauty of the Wi-Fi plan is that the 20Gpbs speeds are level when it comes to download and upload speeds. You will never have to endure buffering videos and laggy games ever again, even if the connection is available to a whole office building.
The fastest service is provided through Google's GFiber Labs division and is possible using the new Nokia 25G passive optical networks (PONs). AT&T also has an offer that's worth $250, but it significantly less gigabytes per second with just 5Gbps.
If you want to apply for the plan, assuming that your location is included in the mentioned cities above, you can wait for its official launch in the first quarter of 2024. You'll also have to prepare your devices and make sure that it has the latest standard of Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7.
Do You Actually Need It?
It sounds enticing especially since you'll see internet speeds like never before. But the question is, what are you going to use it for? It will be a waste to pay $250 when you'll only use a fraction of it, which you can get from other plans.
To determine how much Mbps or Gbps you need for your home or office, you need to understand the internet speed required for certain activities. For instance, You only need 25 Mbps to stream 4K content. With 20 Gbps, you can stream 800 4k videos at the same time.
For online gaming, according to Tom's Guide, you only need about 50 Mbps, which means that you can have about 400 PCs connected to the same Wi-Fi and not have any problems. For a household with less than ten people, 20Gbps is way too much.
It would be a good investment for apartment buildings or offices that hold several tenants or employees who require an internet connection. For 40 people, each can get up to 500 Mbps speeds, which is more than enough for an individual.
