Console Gaming: 4 Pros, Cons of Choosing Discs Over Digital Games

The PS5 has two versions you can choose from: One that has a disc drive, and the standard edition which does not. Of course, this all depends on whether you plan on purchasing physical disc games in the future. If you're wondering if they're worth it, here are the pros and cons that come with the option.

Pros:

1. You'll have a physical copy. To state the most obvious one, having a physical copy is sometimes a form of pride for some gamers. They can serve as part of your video game collection, which you can display proudly on your shelf. There's something satisfying about seeing all the games you bought in one place.

2. You can sell them once you're done. If you don't care much about collecting, you can sell the game after you've finished it. The value does not drop that low as well. If you are looking for used console games, you'll notice that most retain up to even 90% of the original price.

3. They could rise in value over time. You never know when a game will become a classic and skyrocket in price. Many who have kept the games they played before learned that classics fetch for an exponentially higher price than when they bought them. For instance, the game Red Sea Crossing for the Atari 2600 is priced at around $10,000 now.

4. You'll still have the game if you lose your account. As you know, you need an account to access the online store for video games. It will then hold all your purchases to be downloaded now or later. In the event that you get hacked or forget your password, a physical disc will still allow you to reinstall the game on a different account.

Cons:

1. It'll be a bit of a hassle to switch games. If you play more than one title at a time, you'll be ejecting and inserting the game discs more than you'd like. That's because disc games will require it always. It might not be bothersome for others, but there are those who would prefer the convenience of having it all on their console.

2. You might lose or damage the disc. Once you badly damage the disc, there's not much you can do to make it work again. Just as you have a physical copy if you lose your account, you can also lose the disc itself. Without it, the downloaded content on your console is basically useless.

3. You can't preload games. The beauty of digital games is that you can preload titles before they are officially launched, meaning that you can play them right away since the download is already done. This might not be an issue for people with fast internet, but it can be annoying to have to wait for hours when others are already deep into the game.

4. It'll be easier to spot discounted games. It'll be harder to look for game sales with discs since you either have to go to a physical store now and then or search for them through third-party stores. With digital games, you can easily access them through the console's store, and they will even be laid out for you.
