Underrated DreamWorks Movie ‘Megamind’ is Getting a Sequel Exclusively on Peacock

We can all name at least one movie that we believe deserves a sequel. If you're among those who were disappointed that "Megamind" did not get the follow-up it deserved, you might be happy to hear that there are more upcoming titles featuring out big-headed genius.

'Megamind' Gets Its Much Deserved Sequel

DreamWorks is behind a lot of animated hits that are still remembered today such as the "Shrek" franchise, the How to Train Your Dragon" franchise, "Rise of the Guardians," and many more. One title that arguably didn't get enough love from the studio is "Megamind."

It has been a little over 13 years since the movie came out in 2010, and it's only now that we'll be getting more of the hilariously misguided alien who grew into a hero from being a villain. No need to wonder if it will be in the form of a film or a series, as it will be both.

Peacock announced that it is working on two "Megamind" titles called "Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate" for the movie, and "Megamind Rules!" for the show, as reported by Screen Rant. But, you might not want to celebrate just yet.

The mentioned titles will be exclusive to the streaming service that announced them, meaning that you will need to subscribe to Peacock's service to watch the content on March 1st. Even the film will not be getting a theater release.

Based on the trailer, the plot will revolve around a few villains with superpowers who used to run around with Megamind, all of whom think that the protagonist is still evil. As Megamind comes up with a plan, he must keep up the ruse that he is the genius villain he once was.

The movie is reportedly picking up where the narrative left off in the first movie, so you might want to rewatch the underrated movie again in case you've already forgotten a few important details. Overall, the new content seems like something you'd watch for a good laugh.

How the Movie Fared in 2010

It didn't immediately get the recognition it deserved, but audiences have grown to like the film over the years. Sadly, producers don't exactly base the potential for a continuation on long-term success, but it seems that the gradual attention it gained was enough for sequels to be greenlit.

Even so, the movie didn't exactly flop at the box office. "Megamind" was created with a budget of $130 million, and earned more than $321 million globally. While those numbers might seem convincing, the movie still did not perform as well as other animated titles that cost less and earned more.

It's also quite surprising that the movie did not get enough attention considering the voice actors behind the major characters. Megamind himself was voiced by Will Ferrell, while the reporter Roxanne Ritchi was played by "Mean Girls" actress Tina Fey.

Furthermore, characters like the dull Bernard whom Megamind disguised as was voiced by "Zoolander" star Ben Stiller, along with other A-list stars like Jonah Hill who played the lovestruck cameraman Hal Stewart, and Brad Pitt as everyone's favorite hero Metro Man.
