The live-action adaptation of the looter-shooter game was first announced back in 2015, which means that fans have been waiting around for almost a decade. After several delays, the first image of the cast has been revealed.
First Look of the Cast
Ever since the cast was announced, Borderlands fans had to settle for fan edits of the actors as the development of the movie seems to be suffering several delays. Now that there is an official photo teaser, we finally get a glimpse of what we can expect from the movie.
In the photo, we can see the main cast such as Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Kevin Hart as Roland, and even the talkative robot Claptrap who will be voiced by Jack Black.
Lilith, like the character from the game, has vibrant red hair. Blanchett's outfit does not match the look that players have been seeing throughout all the Borderlands games as she is now wearing a sleeved jacket, but it still looks Borderlands-y.
Tiny Tina is sporting the bunny ears that served as an iconic look for the young explosives expert. Jamie Lee Curtis will not be dyeing her hair black for the role, but she is still recognizable as Tannis with her short haircut, the same as the doctor.
Kevin Hart's Roland is basically what we see in the game. He dons a military attire and beret standing alongside Claptrap. As for the robot, the photo shows that we'll be getting the exact look from the games. It bodes well that the comedic relief character will be voiced by Jack Black.

Borderlands Film
Although the movie was announced in 2015, the early development did not actually start until 2019. Eli Roth, known for his work with "Hostel" was revealed to be the director of the film. By 2020, the cast was announced and then the filming started in 2021.
Between the news about the adaptation to the start of filming, fans of the franchise were already waiting long enough, so news about the reshoots wasn't exactly the kind of update they wanted to hear about, as it only meant that there would be more delays.
There were changes in the directors for the reshoot, as reported by Kotaku. Instead of Eli Roth, the reshoots were directed by Tim Miller, who worked on movies like "Deadpool." Based on his previous projects, the movie seems to be in good hands.
It was also written by Craig Mazin, who did a remarkable job with both "Chernobyl" and another video game live adaptation, "The Last of Us." It won't be long now before we get to see the movie as it is set to be released in August this year.
The film has been long overdue, and fans of the Borderlands games are hoping for the best outcome. With actors cast in the film, as well as the writers and directors that are involved, the nearly ten-year wait might just be worth it.
