Windows 11 Allows Android Devices as Webcams, Similar to Apple’s Feature

Windows 11 is testing a feature that will allow Android devices to be used as a webcam, a similar feature that has been used by Apple for years now.

The Phone Link system in Windows 11 is now available on select Windows Insiders across all Insider Channels to test and only supports devices running on Android 9 or higher.

Windows 11 Rolls Out Phone Link for Android Devices

Aside from devices running on Android 9 or higher, the link will only be enabled to a Windows app that is version 1.24012* or higher.

To try the new feature, just simply look under the settings menu for Bluetooth and mobile devices. Users must select manage devices and the PC must be enabled to access the Android device.

Some of its features include switching between the front and back camera, pausing the streaming during interruptions, and exploring the effects depending on the mobile model. The feature also supports tablet cameras as long as they fit the requirements.

Microsoft Follows Apple's Continuity Camera Feature

In 2018, Apple debuted the Continuity Camera feature alongside the release of macOS Mojave 10.14. Previously, the feature was launched to create a seamless transfer and preview of documents between devices.

Apple then expanded its features and allowed users to use the iPhone as a Mac webcam for a high-quality wireless experience. Since then, Apple users have been able to upgrade their webcam quality during video conferencing which was mostly used during the pandemic.

"Continuity Camera delivers innovative features to all Mac computers including Center Stage, Portrait mode, and the new Studio Light - an effect that beautifully illuminates a user's face while dimming the background," Apple explained.
