Nintendo and Illumination announced that the sequel to "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is officially in development and is slated for release on April 3, 2026.
The news came on Mario Day 2024, wherein Nintendo announced several Mario-related updates for the franchise.
'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' Gets a Sequel
According to the announcement, the sequel will be directed again by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. Likewise, Illumination Studios Paris is responsible for storyboarding the movie.
The animation of the project will also begin soon, and the companies have already agreed on the release date. The U.S. and select markets globally will be the first to release the movie. Meanwhile, other territories will get to see the film throughout the rest of the month.
"We'll let you know the details once we're ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We're thinking about broadening Mario's world further, and it'll have a bright and fun story," Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo director, shared.
Nintendo Reaps Success of 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie'
Last year was a big moment for Mario fans. The first film was estimated to have earned over $1.349 billion at the global box office. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" also now holds the record for the highest global box office performance of a film based on a video game.
While waiting for the sequel, fans can rewatch the film on Peacock. The subscribers of the platform can also enjoy various bonus content that were all previously exclusive to DVD and Blu-Ray "Power Up Edition."
Aside from another Mario movie, Nintendo is gearing up for the live-action film of "The Legend of Zelda." The film will be co-produced by Arad Productions and directed by Wes Ball, known for his work on "The Maze Runner."
