"The Zone of Interest" is loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis, which was also inspired by real events during the heights of the Nazi Party's power. The film follows the lives of the family who resides next to the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Prior to the Oscars, the film had already won the Grand Prix and FIPRESCI Prize given by the National Board of Review. It also received critical acclaim from the 77th British Academy Film Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.
During the Oscars night, director Jonathan Glazer used his acceptance speech to condemn the Israel-Hamas war, narrating some parallels from the film to real-life scenarios of today.
"Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It's shaped all of our past and present. Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people," Glazer shared.
How to Watch 'The Zone of Interest'
While the film is still weeks away, fans can rent or purchase it on demand through Prime Video and Apple TV+.
"The Zone of Interest" features Oscar-nominee Sandra Huller, also known for her role in the "Anatomy of a Fall." She plays Hedwig, the wife of Commandant Rudolf Hoss, as she tries to navigate through their daily routine, ignoring the obvious fact that they live next to a concentration camp.
The film which was distributed by award-winning studio A24 was also nominated for Best Picture but it lost to Christopher Nolan's biopic, "Oppenheimer."
