Baldur's Gate 3 Developers Will Not Make DLC, Sequel to D&D Game

Baldur's Gate 3 developers Larian Studios confirmed that it will not make a DLC expansion or a sequel to the 2023 Game of the Year winner as it distances from the Dungeons & Dragons franchise.

The sad news after Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke said that the company is moving on from the game and the D&D franchise as a whole, leaving the IP into its owners Wizards of the Coast, IGN reported.

Vincke said that Larian will still update the game and release a cross-platform mod but will no longer be a continuation of the massive story covered in the base game.

The announcement came after the studios earlier hinted plans to make a DLC expansion to the game on the same scale as the Witcher 3's DLCs.

Baldur's Gate 3 was the game developers' largest hit and Hasbro's, the owner of the WOTC, biggest revenue contributor amid slow growth in its other divisions and subsidiaries.

The D&D-based game sold over 10 million copies since it first officially launched in August last year.

Larian Studios Shifts Towards Development of a New Game

Although Larian Studios will not be working on Baldur's Gate 3 anymore, it does not mean that the game developer does not have anything to offer players who enjoyed their particular gameplay design.

In a subsequent interview with IGN, Vincke hinted that the studio is working on another game that would still be familiar to many of its fans.

The CEO did not provide much detail on their future project but confirmed that it would not be Divinity: Original Sin 3, another of Larian Studios' popular games with similar mechanics with Baldur's Gate.

The studio has been noted for hiring a lot of full-time workers across all of its branches, including animators, voice actors, and game designers, so it can be assumed that the next project will be big.

Hasbro Seeks to Release More 'High Quality D&D Game'

As for Hasbro's part, the D&D and Magic: The Gathering owner expressed support to Larian Studios' move towards its other projects.

Hasbro noted plans to build an in-house game development studio to handle its titles, including visions to bring more "high quality D&D game" thanks to a resurgence with its audience.

The company said they intend to release an AAA game to match the feats Baldur's Gate 3 made.
