Amazon Ditches Just Walk Out System for Dash Carts for Upcoming Fresh Stores

Amazon will start replacing its Just Walk Out technology with Dash Cart as the company continues to redesign its Fresh stores.

The Just Walk Out system is a known feature in the Fresh stores which allows customers to pay for their purchases without standing in line.

Amazon to Revamp Fresh Stores With Dash Carts

Amazon has been redesigning some of its Fresh stores in the past year. The company found out that customers are more interested in viewing their receipts and savings while shopping instead of the convenience of skipping the line.

"To deliver even more convenience to our customers, we're rolling out Amazon Dash Cart, our smart shopping carts, which allows customers all these benefits including skipping the checkout line," said Jessica Martin, Amazon's spokesperson.

Using the Dash Cart will allow customers to scan the QR code through the Amazon app. Alternatively, they can scan their purchases using the Dash Cart cameras as they place them in the cart. Customers can still skip the checkout line through the special Dash Cart lane.

Amazon Reviews Fresh Stores Technology for Customers

Last year, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reported that some Amazon Fresh and Go stores were shut down due to unimpressive sales. The move affected the expansion of other Fresh stores which was then paused.

For its redesign plans, Amazon is planning to install self-checkout while continuing to offer assisted checkout as an option. Customers are free to choose any method that will work best for them.

Amazon started to reopen three Fresh stores in Los Angeles, California. This year, the company revealed that it is focused on "selectively" opening new Fresh stores and revamping the majority of its existing stores.

The Just Walk Out system will still be available in Amazon Go stores and smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K., along with other third-party retailers.
