Roku confirmed that over 576,000 streaming accounts have been compromised in its latest data breach incident, just two months after its first major cyberattack.
In a blog post on Friday, the streaming TV service said it was notified of the second data breach following its investigation on the reported 15,000 accounts being illegally sold by hackers last March.
Roku claimed that the data breach was not caused by a breach on the company's account credentials or systems, but rather likely a breach into "another online account."
The streaming service has detected "less than 400 cases" of hackers purchasing streaming subscriptions on the payment method stored in the accounts but did not find any evidence that they accessed any sensitive information, including credit card details.
Roku has already enabled two-factor authentication to all accounts and recommended users to immediately change their passwords to prevent malicious actors from still accessing the compromised accounts.
Roku reportedly provides streaming services to over 80 million active users around the world.
How to Secure Your Roku Account?
While Roku has already employed security measures for their subscribed users, it is still important to heighten defenses from any possible data breaches in the future, especially because this was the second time in such a short time.
It is recommended to regularly update the Roku account and any digital wallet, credit card, or payment method stored in the accounts.
Do not give any account details like password, email address, credit card information, and personal details to any suspicious account presenting themselves as representative of Roku.
For any concerns and inquiries about its services, only refer to Roku's Customer Support page. Any other means of communication with the company may put the account and connected digital wallets at risk.
