Video game players have seen an abundance of live-action adaptations in the past few years, and most of them are good enough to do the source material justice. One of the applauded titles is Amazon's "Fallout," and the story will continue for a second season.
'Fallout' Season 2 Confirmed
It hasn't even been two weeks since the show was released, and Amazon already found it fitting to renew the show for a second season. This could be a sign that the show has done well in terms of viewership, although Amazon has yet to release the statistics.
The company simply said that in its first four days, "the high-octane fueled series has become a hit with its global audience, ranking among the service's top three most-watched titles ever and the most-watched season globally since Rings of Power," as per The Verge.
Even though Amazon has not released the numbers yet, review sites show that the show was well-received. On Rotten Tomatoes, "Fallout" has 94% and 88% scores, and is labeled as the most popular on the site.
One thing that might've contributed to the success of the series is that it didn't simply adapt the existing story from the video game franchise. Instead, showrunners created an entirely new narrative that was still set within the same universe.
The show is set in Los Angeles but tells the story through three perspectives. One is vault dweller Lucy's, another is Brotherhood of Steel member Maximus', and the last is The Ghoul's, which gives viewers a better understanding of the "Fallout" world.
Executive Producer Graham Wagner said: "Just like a player of the video game, we go down paths that interest us." This method of adaptation makes it so new fans wouldn't miss out on a couple of contexts that only players of the game would understand.
Of course, that's not an issue for most adaptations. HBO's "The Last of Us," for instance, can be enjoyed by new fans even without playing the game. If anything, they still have the element of anticipation since they don't know how the story will end yet.
Fallout Sees a Boost in Players
The video game it was adapted from has been around for years, and it still has current players right now. After the show was released, nostalgia and curiosity kicked in as Fallout 4 saw an increase in players.
According to ComicBook, Fallout 4 has reached the top 10 list on Steam. It saw a peak of 93,294 players on April 17th, which is a 55.18% increase in the last 30 days. In the last few years, the numbers have been steady at around 24,000.
It beat the previous highest peak since it was launched, which was 74,283 players in May 2016. For people who want to try the game, it's even on sale right now on Steam with 75% off, which likely contributed to the significant increase in its player base.
You can also choose to explore the entire franchise since Bethesda is also holding a bundle sale. The Fallout Franchise Bundle is currently 77% off at just $55.55, and it already includes 16 items.
