MMORPG Set in the World of 'Game of Thrones' is in Development

Even though it has almost been five years since the last episode of HBO's "Game of Thrones" was released, the franchise continues to grow and gain more fans. In addition to spin-offs and already existing games, the show will be getting an MMORPG where players can create a new character.

'Game of Thrones' MMORPG

In case you don't know, MMORPG stands for massively multiplayer online role-playing game, which means that players will get to choose a protagonist they will play with. Fans would be happy to know that the game will also be set in Westeros.

The game will reportedly be developed by a Korean publisher, Nexon, which is already behind the publishing of a popular title like The Finals. It's unclear whether the development of the game will be within the studio or if another would step in.

The player will first find themselves in the North, where the Starks are still the prominent family. Since the game is set in the universe of the show, Winterfell and The Wall will be in-game locations, along with other significant locations.

Players will be inserted into the show's timeline as well, particularly around the events of seasons four and five. That means that Roose Bolton is still the Warden of the North and Jon Snow is still in the Night's Watch, as pointed out by Eurogamer.

Before the players immerse themselves in the story, they will have to choose between two characters, which are male and female. The unpicked character will still be a part of the story, kind of like choosing between Kassandra and Alexios in Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

For now, only a few details about the game are made known, and there's even no clear news about the studios that will work on it yet aside from Nexon. It goes without saying that a launch date is still not revealed, and will likely take years before the game is launched.

Regardless, the game has the potential to be something big, especially since the franchise continues to grow to this day as spin-offs are still in the works, and the prequel "House of the Dragon" is still ongoing.

The Expanding Franchise

The upcoming MMORPG is just another one on the list of projects that have branched out from the original series. For instance, "House of the Dragon" season two is set to release its first episode on June 16th, and is expected to show more seasons to cover the events of the era.

There are also talks about another spin-off, which would serve as a prequel to a prequel. Reportedly titled "Aegon's Conquest," it will tell the story of Aegon the Conqueror when they fled Valyria and landed on Westeros.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the show was already in early development, with rumors that "The Batman II" screenwriter Mattson Tomlin will be working on the title. Sadly, the same cannot be said about the Jon Snow-centric show titled "Snow," which has been shut down by HBO due to the lack of a story to tell.
