Tesla is being sued by the Environmental Democracy Project (EDP) for alleged failure to comply with the Clean Air Act on its Fremont, California factory.
The EDP argued that the electric vehicle company has been violating the law several times since 2021 and has affected the neighborhood.
Tesla Receives Accusations From Environmental Groups
The environmental group filed the suit in a federal court in San Francisco. The document detailed that Tesla has been harming the neighborhoods within the Fremont factory a hundred times since January 2021.
Moreover, the group emphasized that the assembly plant has been emitting harmful pollution and has contributed to the air pollution in the environment. The surrounding area is said to be exposed to "excess amounts of air pollution, including nitrogen oxides, arsenic, cadmium, and other harmful chemicals."
In 2022, Tesla was fined $275,000 for failing to measure and maintain its emission records. The company also failed to minimize its air pollutants from painting operations. Last year, the company ranked 89 on the Toxic 100 Air Polluters list.
Tesla Sued on Different Counties Due to Environmental Concerns
The electric vehicle company was also sued by 25 counties in California for its mishandling of hazardous waste materials. The company quickly settled with the counties. Outside the U.S., Tesla is also facing some issues with environmentalists for its clearing operations of forests and water consumption.
"The violations are frequent, recurring, and can negatively affect public health and the environment," said the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, an environmental regulator.
The regulator revealed that Tesla has accumulated 112 violation notices since 2019. Regardless, Tesla remains firm on its company mission to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy by switching to electric vehicles.
