Discord unveiled its plans to refocus the platform on gaming and communication by improving several areas during its ninth-year celebration post.
The company has also invested in rewarding gamers, game publishers, and platform developers through various new features.
Discord Announces Three Focus Areas for Improvements
In a blog post, Discord shared some of its immediate plans that will be released within the rest of the year. This includes quicker communication lines, prioritization of streaming and video technology, and creating opportunities for developers.
Recently, the platform managed to double the speed and reliability of its app. The Go Live stream lag has been reduced after the release of the updated 64-bit desktop client. The platform now also supports cross-platform play on Xbox and PlayStation 5.
The company also unveiled its refreshed look, featuring a new visual identity for gamers seeking improved communication while gaming. Some of its new looks are expected to roll out on chats, servers, and more.
Discord Extends Support to Game Publishers, Developers
Discord launched its Quests earlier this year to help players earn rewards while playing with friends without leaving the app. The feature also allows publishers to market their games to Discord users.
Moreover, the new Embedded App SDK was released for platform developers who want to expose their latest games and market them directly within Discord. As of writing, thousands of developers are exploring a feature called Activities.
"Over the next decade, we believe another billion people will be playing multiplayer games and enjoying the kinds of deep, rich experiences that we all have come to love," said Jason Citron, CEO of Discord.
Discord holds a record of 200 million users per month. The company also shared that 90% of the users are gamers, accounting for 1.5 billion hours of playing.
