Windows Notepad Receives Autocorrect Feature for the First Time in 41 Years

Windows Notepad will soon have its first spellcheck and autocorrect features after 41 years as Microsoft introduces more AI features on its essential OS apps.

First reported by ZDNet, Microsoft is adding a minimal but much-needed update on the classic Windows app to function similarly to mainstream word processors.

This will be in addition to previous updates the Windows maker has introduced on the app, including a dark mode, autosave, and a more streamlined tab display.

The AI-powered feature is expected to help people usethe app for coding and jotting down memos.

As of writing, the updated Notepad app is already available for Windows 11 users.

It is unclear if Microsoft also intends to roll out the update on its soon-to-be-defunct Windows 10 as it did with the other AI features, including its Copilot chatbot.

AI Updates on More Classic Windows Apps

The Notepad is not the only classic Windows app that is slated to receive AI-powered updates in the coming months.

ZDNet earlier reported that Microsoft is also looking to update its Snipping Tool to allow users to add shapes and lines to their screenshots, much similar to Apple's Mark-Up feature in Mac laptops.

While minimal on its own, the Snipping Tool will be accompanied by a wave of new photo customization and recording features Microsoft has launched on Windows 11.

Microsoft Doubles Down on AI Despite Safety Concerns

Amid rollouts of more AI-powered features on people's computers, there has also been a growing sentiment against Microsoft's current attitude towards its technology and user data privacy.

The company recently got embroiled in controversy over one of its planned AI-powered features that can remember all the sites, files, and apps users have opened.

Many AI experts have labeled such a feature to be highly attractive to hackers due to the amount of user information it contains. Microsoft later delayed the feature as it promised to improve its safety and security systems.
