Hollywood video game actors announced their plan to strike on the increasing AI concerns after several major gaming studios broke down some regulations on using AI.
The performers under the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) will start their strike at 12:01 in the morning of July 26.
SAG-AFTRA to Fight for AI Protections for Game Artists
According to the SAG-AFTRA negotiators, significant changes were made to improve the wages and job safety in the video game industry contract. However, two sides remain in question over the regulation of generative AI.
The committee is reportedly asking for the studios' definition of "performer" in terms of the contract to clarify further who would be protected. The negotiators argue that companies are treating physical performances as "data."
"The industry has told us point blank that they do not necessarily consider everyone who is rendering movement performance to be a performer that is covered by the collective bargaining agreement," said SAG-AFTRA Chief Contracts Officer Ray Rodriguez at a news conference.
SAG-AFTRA Video Game Performers Strike Against Studios
The performers claimed that without specific protection, gaming studios could easily train AI models to replicate their voices without offering them fair compensation or asking for their permission. They also stated that the strike is their last resort.
Meanwhile, Audrey Cooling, spokesperson for the video game producers, stated that they are disappointed that the union chose to walk away despite nearly closing the deal. She also shared that they are still prepared for the resumption of negotiation.
Last year, the union had a strike to address the pressing concerns about the role of AI in movie production. The strike resulted in halted film and television operations and lasted for four months.
