Marvel's Doctor Doom Casting Choice Faces Online Backlash from MCU Fans

Marvel's casting choice for its third live-adaptation take on the villainous Doctor Doom is causing a stir among fans as many people accused the decision of being "lazy" and another "cash grab" move.

Far from the applauses during the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel's choice to cast Robet Downey Jr., who was previously cast as Iron Man, was not as well received on online spaces.

Many criticisms pointed at the decision claimed that the MCU has been reduced to "cash grabs and nostalgia with no sense of creativity" to revamp the franchise.

Another popular argument surrounds Marvel's choice to not cast a Romani actor for Doctor Doom, an aspect many fans claim plays an important part in the villain's motivations.

RDJ Replaces Jonathan Majors for Marvel's Next Big Bad

Others see the return of the popular Iron Man actor as a hasty decision from Marvel after the lukewarm reception of Kang the Conqueror, Marvel's planned Big Bad for its Phase 6 schedule.

It did not help that Kang's actor, Jonathan Majors, is currently embroiled in legal controversies amid reports of several domestic violence charges.

Despite the negative reaction, the casting reveal is currently among Instagram's Top 15 most-viewed videos with 212 million views and 10.4 million likes.

It is uncertain which movie in the MCU timeline Downey's Doctor Doom will first appear, although Marvel already confirmed that he will be the central antagonist for "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Avengers: Secret Wars," with "Avengers: Infinity War" saga directors, the Russo brothers, leading the production.

The recent casting choice backlash was not the first time Marvel faced open criticisms about its production choices after completing its Phase 4 schedule with the "Avengers: Endgame."

Many fans still consider "Endgame" as the end of the franchise after Marvel's several failed attempts to regain people's attention back to the MCU.

So far, the franchise plans to do that with its approach to multiverse and variant to build up for its next "Avengers" film.
