Wolverine is a foundation character for the 'X-Men' franchise while Deadpool is a spin-off from the franchise but has always worked alone unlike other Marvel characters.

Both characters have rich backstories and histories that span years of joining the fandom. While it is not required to watch the entire franchise to fully enjoy the new film, new fans should try the origin stories first.

'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'

While the "X-Men' franchise started in 2000, 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is a prequel that centers on the backstory of Logan or Wolverine. The story provides a detailed explanation of how a young Logan discovered his mutant abilities which include the appearance of bone claws and rapid healing.

Over the years, Logan fought various wars as he was able to heal faster than normal but has decreased aging. Wolverine attempts to live a peaceful life until a series of events leads to the introduction of a stronger new mutant called Deadpool.

'The Wolverine'

"The Wolverine" is considered as a follow-up movie from the events of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." The film highlights Logan's redemption arc as he tries to rediscover himself outside of his life as Wolverine.

The majority of Wolverine's life is focused on his agelessness which makes him immortal at some degree. However, the loneliness brought by Jean's death makes him question the purpose of immortality.

For the first time, Wolverine is stripped of his healing ability, making him vulnerable. Logan must rely on his combat and survival skills for his battle in this movie.

'Logan'

"Logan" is the final movie in the Wolverine trilogy and marked Hugh Jackman's conclusion to his portrayal of the character. The film is set in the future where mutants are nearly extinct and Logan is already aging.

Despite wearing off the Wolverine persona, Logan decides to help a young mutant, Laura, who bears the same powers as him. Laura was created using Logan's DNA through a Transigen project.

Logan and Laura depict a father-and-daughter bond that affects the Wolverine in a positive light. Laura survives, along with other young mutants, while Logan finally finds his peace.

'Deadpool' & 'Deadpool 2'

The first "Deadpool" movie details the backstory of how Wade Wilson becomes a powerful mutant. Prior to the fight scene in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," he was diagnosed with cancer and sought a cure from a shady organization.

After gaining mutant powers, he adopts an alter ego called Deadpool and embarks on a journey. A personal tragedy opens an opportunity for him to join the X-Men in "Deadpool 2." Time traveling is introduced in the movie as well.
