Samsung Claims Galaxy Z Flip Potential as Bodycams

In a press release, Samsung shared the potential of its new Galaxy Z Flip phones to assist law enforcement workers during dangerous situations. Officers from Kimberling City Police and the Indian Point Police in Missouri pilot-tested the device two years ago.

The officers were equipped with Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series smartphones by clipping the device on the front of their uniforms to capture any movement. The program marked the first time that the police force utilized a foldable device as a bodycam.

"With the effectiveness of the devices established, Samsung explored ways to broaden their usage to even more police officers," the company wrote.

After six months of pilot testing, Samsung expanded its trial to the San Benito and the Craig County Sheriff's departments. The goal of the program is to provide the technology to more public service professionals over time.

The company partnered with Visual Labs, a body camera solution provider, to ensure that the devices are secured and fit for purpose for the officers. The Galaxy Z Flip smartphones were customized to revamp the external volume button as a starting button to record urgent situations.

The smartphone's recording can also be enabled by detecting high-speed motion when catching a suspect or if connected to a dashcam. The new features are placed to ensure that the device can capture critical moments during operations.
