Survey Shows Tech Companies' Struggle to Retain On-Site Work

More employees are reluctant to return to working on-site after introducing work-from-home arrangements during the pandemic. About 79% of the companies chose to adopt a flexible work arrangement for their employee.

Around 56% of them implemented an "employee's choice" which allowed their staff to choose their own working arrangement. Meanwhile, 18% stated that they started to require their work-from-home employees to return to the office on specific days of the week.

Only three percent of the surveyed companies revealed that they are requiring their employees to return fully on-site or face consequences. The number was down from eight percent in 2023.

Tech Employees Seek Hybrid, Flexible Working Arrangements

The tech industry is well-equipped to operate under a hybrid labor market. However, several companies have started to mandate their employees to report again to the office starting in 2023.

For instance, Zoom announced that employees who are living within 50 miles of its office must work on-site at least two days per week. Roblox also released an internal memo, requiring its remote workers to report at the office from Tuesday to Thursday.

Some companies argued that while remote work is functional, most executives prefer seeing their employees interacting in real-time and face-to-face.

On the contrary, companies like Roblox stated that non-compliance to the back-to-office mandate will result in consequences, such as losing their position.

Remote employees faced the challenge of forced relocation near the office or losing their jobs. Considering the high cost of relocation, most employees are likely to prefer finding a new remote job.
