LG Display is looking to revolutionize the clothing and wearable technology industry as it is set to debut its stretchable OLED at Seoul Fashion Week. LG has already unveiled it online prior to the event, showcasing the many applications for fabrics including dresses or shirts, as well as tote bags. 

This specific development has been a continuous project for, LG Display which started four years ago. With its scheduled debut, it seems it is ready to be finalized.  

LG Display to Debut Stretchable OLED for Seoul Fashion Week

The latest press release from LG unveiled its new stretchable OLEDs which it has been developing since 2020, now applied to different types of clothing and bags. The company is now set to unveil its Stretchable displays at the 2025 S/S Seoul Fashion Week at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), with the company considering it a milestone for this project. 

According to LG, its new stretchable displays are to be showcased on the runway this September 5 to 7 as they will be used in the creations of renowned Korean designers Youn-Hee Park and Chung-Chung Lee. 

It can be expected that this new type of OLED would be featured on different types of garments, sleeves, and clutch bags.

LG's Stretchable Display Can be Applied to Almost Any Fabric

This new product from LG comes after the "industry's first'" stretchable prototype, which the company first unveiled in 2022. It is  capable of stretching from 12 to 14 inches while maintaining a 100ppi resolution.

It can "freely" be stretched, folded, and twisted in order for it to be applied on almost any type of fabric.

Smart Clothes and Its Current Developments

In the past decade, various smart clothes or apparel have popped up in the market, ooking to revolutionize the way people use what they wear instead of only for fashion needs. 

As an example, a company called Lumo unveiled its "smart shorts," whichat are capable of letting users know their real-time running metrics. This is made possible by its nine-axis smart sensor that is built into the underpants.

More recently, there has been a fabric that was developed in China, which is referred to as 'smart fabric.' This fabric can detect temperature and adapt accordingly in both hot and cold temperatures. This drew inspiration from smart textiles, which can either warm or cool the body but cannot do both. This Chinese smart fabric promises that it can do both without needing external power sources.  

LG's development spanned almost four years, and towards the end of its timeline, the company was able to develop its stretchable OLED that allows them to easily put them on clothes. The era of wearable technology is about to be redefined once again thanks to LG Display's stretchable OLEDs, which capable of adding displays on clothes or other fabrics of different shapes and sizes.
