Samsung SM-A500 full-metal smartphone to launch by end-September with mid-range specs

Samsung reportedly plans to launch full-metal smartphones in the coming weeks, as part of its new A series of mid-rangers.

The company has long been rumored to be working on metal-clad smartphones, but so far nothing has materialized. While the Samsung Galaxy Alpha does indeed use metal for its frame, it's not the full-metal smartphone many were hoping for.

Nevertheless, Samsung is reportedly still planning to launch metal-clad smartphones and more details have now surfaced in this regards. According to an exclusive new report from SamMobile, a mid-range smartphone with model number SM-A500 is en route, boasting a full metal body. The handset will reportedly be part of Samsung's upcoming A series, which will consist of three mid-range smartphones with metal bodies.

"The most interesting thing we've learned from our source is that the SM-A500 will have a full metal body, without a removable back cover. If true, this means the phone won't have the new faux leather back that Samsung has been using on most of its recent devices, and hence might feel more premium than even the Galaxy Alpha despite its mid-range specs," the publication reports.

In terms of specifications, SamMobile claims that this SM-A500 smartphone will sport a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with an HD resolution and will pack a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor under the hood. Other specs include an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front shooter, and 16GB of internal storage capacity. While the handset will reportedly have a non-removable back cover, it will have some sort of hybrid port to house a nano-SIM and a microSD card slot for expandable storage.

On the software side, the SM-A500 should launch with the latest version of Android on board, and it should also feature Samsung's exclusive software features such as Ultra Power Saver and others. Being a mid-ranger, however, the handset will likely not boast a fingerprint reader, a heart rate monitor, or other such treats. A 2,330 mAh battery will reportedly keep things up and running, which should provide decent performance on a single charge.

Keep in mind, however, that while SamMobile has a good track record when it comes to the accuracy of its leaks, it all remains in the rumor state for now. If Samsung does indeed plan to launch its new A series by the end of September, as previously rumored, more details should become available soon enough. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more, but take everything with a grain of salt in the meantime.
