Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge variant may not be in the cards after all

Rumors of a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge variant to join next year's flagship may not turn out to be accurate after all, according to new information.

Not too long ago, word came out that Samsung was working on a Galaxy S6 flagship smartphone to launch in 2015, as well as a curved-display variant of the handset that would arrive as the Galaxy S6 Edge. The rumor did not seem so farfetched because Samsung already pulled a similar scheme this year, when it launched its Galaxy Note 4 phablet alongside the intriguing Galaxy Note Edge curved-display variant.

Nevertheless, SamMobile is now revising its original report, claiming that new information has come to light and there may not be a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge variant in the cards after all.

"We recently published exclusive info on the Galaxy S6, Samsung's next big flagship smartphone that will launch sometime early next year. We had received inside info that the Galaxy S6 would also have a curved screen variant called the Galaxy S6 Edge, but we've now received updated details from one of our insiders that suggests there might not be an Edge variant of the S6 after all," SamMobile reports. "Apparently, there's still a separate variant of the Galaxy S6 in the works, but at the moment, the prototype device doesn't have an Edge screen."

In other words, it remains unclear for now just what that other variant of the Samsung Galaxy S6 will have to offer over the flagship version. It may add a curved display sometime later, it may be a Prime variant targeting the elite, or it could take a different approach altogether.

As for the Samsung Galaxy S6, the company reportedly got back to the drawing board with a "Project Zero" that could result in an all-new metallic design, shooting for a big change compared to the current Galaxy S5. Many believe the current flagship was not innovative enough and did not offer as many upgrades as it should have over its predecessor, and the Galaxy S5 didn't perform all that well on the market. Samsung was left with a large number of units piling up in warehouses due to underwhelming sales of the device, and that's why the company reportedly wants to start all over from scratch with its next iteration.

Some reports suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S6 may come with a QHD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, a 64-bit Exynos processor or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 CPU, a 20-megapixel rear camera, and more.

It all remains in the rumor state for now, however, so make sure to take all leaks and reports with a hefty grain of salt.
