The first Vaio smartphone may debut in a couple of weeks with some neat mid-range specs on board, according to a new report.
Earlier rumors indicated that the former Sony laptop unit was gearing up to join the smartphone arena this year, but nothing materialized so far. A new report out of Japan, however, now claims to have new information on the matter, hinting at an imminent release.
More specifically, a report from Japanese publication Blog of Mobile (via GSM Dome) reveals that the upcoming Vaio smartphone will make its official debut on March 12. It remains unclear at this point just what the smartphone will be called, but the publication reveals some of its purported specifications.
According to this report, the Vaio smartphone will sport a 5-inch display with an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and pack a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor under the hood, clocked at 1.2GHz and likely paired with 2GB of RAM. Other alleged specifications include 16GB of internal storage capacity, a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, and a 5-megapixel front shooter. Connectivity options will reportedly include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but there's no word yet on 4G LTE. The report also makes no mention of battery capacity, microSD support, price, or commercial release date. On the software side, the upcoming Vaio smartphone is expected to run Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.
Considering its specifications, the Vaio smartphone should come with an affordable price tag, suitable for the mid-range sector of the smartphone market. Blog of Mobile further notes that the smartphone will be available via Japan Communications' sales channels.
If this report turns out to be accurate, it should all become official soon enough, as the purported March 12 unveiling event is just around the corner. We'll keep an eye out for the announcement and keep you up to date as soon as it's official, but make sure to take everything with a grain of salt in the meantime. Vaio has yet to confirm plans to launch a smartphone in the near future, which means that everything is still in the rumor state at this point.
