Samsung Galaxy S6 Active specs leak, handset reportedly headed to AT&T first

A Samsung Galaxy S6 Active is apparently on its way and will initially launch on AT&T in the U.S., according to an exclusive new report.

Samsung just launched its new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones at the beginning of this month at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015, and it now seems that a new variant is en route.

Just recently rumors started to emerge regarding a new Samsung Galaxy S6 Active smartphone, and more information has now surfaced in this regards, complete with spec details.

SamMobile reports that the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active will come with model number SM-G890A and feature a 5.1-inch display just like the Galaxy S6, boasting the same impressive QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The processor will apparently be identical as well, as the Galaxy S6 Active will reportedly pack the company's octa-core Exynos 7420 SoC under the hood.

Other purported specifications of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 Active include 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage capacity, a 16-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front shooter. The handset will reportedly rock a larger battery compared to the flagship Galaxy S6, boasting a 3,500 mAh unit.

Because it's a more rugged version, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active will also be dust- and waterproof, as well as drop-proof, according to the report. This should make the smartphone significantly more durable and likely boost its success. SamMobile further notes that the handset will make its initial debut with U.S. carrier AT&T. On the software side, the smartphone should launch with Android Lollipop out of the box. The Galaxy S6 Active will launch as the successor to last year's Galaxy S5 Active (pictured above).

No other details are available at this point, which means that it remains unclear for now just when the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active will be ready for prime time, or how much it will cost when it hits retail. Samsung has yet to make an official announcement in this regards, and no images are available yet to show the design of the smartphone.

We'll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as more information becomes available, but take everything with a grain of salt in the meantime. Until Samsung officially confirms the Galaxy S6 Active, it all remains in the rumor state and should be treated accordingly.
