Google updates Gmail for Android with unified inbox, more improvements

Google just announced a new version of Gmail for Android, bringing a number of neat features such as a unified inbox for extra convenience.

Google's plans to bring a unified inbox to the mobile version of Gmail are not exactly a big surprise anymore, as the APK became available a few months ago. The updated Android app now offers this much-touted functionality with several improvements. With a unified inbox, users will be able to access all of their emails from different accounts in just one inbox, without the need to sign in and out of several email accounts.

"These days, many of us have more than one email address. If you're a student, you may have one account for school, one for a campus group you lead, and one for your blog. If you're a parent, you might have one for family and one for your business," Google explained in a new company blog post on Monday, March 30. "However many email addresses you have, today's improvements to the Gmail app for Android make it easy to manage all your mail from all your accounts (yes, even @yahoo and @outlook) while you're on the go."

"Starting today you'll be able to view all your mail at once, regardless of which account it's from, using the new "All Inboxes" option. This way you can read and respond to all your messages without having to hop between accounts."

In addition to the new unified inbox option, the updated Gmail for Android app also displays all of your emails in Google's clutter-free conversation view. This feature also supports multiple email accounts and multiple email addresses.

"You've told us threaded conversations are one of your favorite Gmail features because they keep your messages organized and give you all the context you need to reply to those long email threads. Now messages from your Yahoo, Outlook.com and other IMAP/POP accounts will get the same special treatment, appearing neatly stacked as one conversation."

Moreover, Google has also added some improvements to the search function in Gmail for Android, which should now perform faster and with better auto-complete options, according to the company.

Lastly, the updated Gmail for Android also boasts more responsive animations, larger attachment previews, as well as the ability to save something to Drive with a single tap.
