Samsung Galaxy S6 sales already doubled Galaxy S5 on T-Mobile

The new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are apparently off to a strong start, already doubling sales of the previous Galaxy S5 on T-Mobile.

Unveiled back at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 in early March, the new-generation Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge have stirred lots of interest worldwide due to their high-end specs and features, as well as more premium design.

For years Samsung has been criticized for its love of plastic, launching even its highest-end flagship devices with polycarbonate bodies. After the Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy A series came out with metallic designs, most became convinced that the new Galaxy S6 flagship smartphone would no longer come with a plastic body.

While the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge indeed ditch the plastic design, however, they're not full-metal either. The two handsets sport a metal frame and a glass back, which still makes them look and feel more premium compared to previous Galaxy smartphones with plastic bodies.

In terms of hardware, the two smartphones have nearly identical specifications, sporting 5.1-inch QHD displays (2560 x 1440 pixels), octa-core Samsung Exynos 7420 processors under the hood, 3GB of RAM, 32/64/128 GB of internal storage capacity, 16-megapixel rear cameras, and 5-megapixel front shooters. The Galaxy S6 has a 2,550 mAh battery, while the Galaxy S6 Edge has a slightly more powerful 2,600 mAh unit, both non-removable. Both handsets ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, complete with Samsung's own TouchWiz UI on top.

If T-Mobile sales of the smartphones are any indication, the new Samsung Galaxy S6 series is far more successful than the previous Galaxy S5 iteration.

"Since T-Mobile began shipping-and selling-the Galaxy S 6 and Galaxy S 6 edge on March 27, customer response has been through the roof. In just the first 10 days, sales of the new Galaxy S 6 series at T-Mobile are already nearly double those of the Galaxy S 5 - previously the most popular Galaxy phone ever at T-Mobile," revealed the carrier.

Samsung itself said that it expects record sales for its new-generation Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones, and estimates they will sell better even compared to the popular Galaxy S4.

It remains to be seen just how successful the two smartphones will be, but initial sales sound quite promising.
