The older LG G2 is finally getting a treat to Android 5.0 Lollipop on AT&T and T-Mobile, as both carriers are now rolling out the update.
With LG's upcoming April 28 announcement, most of the attention is now focused toward the next-generation LG G4 expected to make its official debut at the event. Owners of older LG devices such as the LG G2, however, are still waiting to get a taste of the last major version of Android, as not all carriers rolled out the update.
Surprisingly, Verizon Wireless, who usually drags its feet when it comes to updates, rolled out Android 5.0 Lollipop to its LG G2 before AT&T and T-Mobile. Nevertheless, it was a sign that other carriers would most likely follow suit shortly, and so they have.
Both AT&T and T-Mobile have started to push Android 5.0 Lollipop to their respective versions of the LG G2, bringing the handset to the last major version of the OS. The update was quite overdue for the aging smartphone, but it's nonetheless good news to see it rolling out now. There is, however, a slight difference in versions between the AT&T and the T-Mobile updates.
While AT&T is now rolling out Android 5.0.1 to the LG G2, T-Mobile is pushing the Android 5.0.2 version. Data or settings should not be affected by either build, but it's still recommended to back up your files before proceeding with the installation.
"Beginning April 14 - May 22, the LG G2 Android 5.0.2 / Software D80130b software update will be available via OTA and manual pull down. This optional update will be gradual and randomly made available to all LG G2 customers. This update provides features and improvements," T-Mobile announced.
"On April 14, 2015, AT&T released a software update for the LG G2 (D800). This update will be made available to customers to download via Firmware Over The Air (FOTA). Wi-Fi is required," reads AT&T's announcement.
As always with OTA updates, the rollout will be gradual and will not reach all handsets at the same time, as the carriers themselves point out. If you can't wait for the update notification, however, you can always manually check for its availability by going into your device's Menu > Settings > General > About Phone > Software update. If the update is available, select Update Now and wait for the installation to complete.
