Sony has not launched an Xperia P series smartphone in roughly three years, but this could very well change soon if a new leak turns out to be accurate.
The original Sony Xperia P was not exactly a whopping hit, so it wasn't very surprising that the company did not launch more iterations. According to a new leak, however, a Sony Xperia P2 smartphone is in the pipeline. Curiously enough, the purported smartphone sounds similar in specifications to the newly-announced Xperia Z4.
Quietly unveiled in Japan last week, the Sony Xperia Z4 doesn't boast lots of notable improvements compared to its predecessor. The rather small leap compared to the previous Xperia Z3, along with the quiet announcement just for Japan, sparked speculation that it may in fact not be the company's flagship smartphone for 2015, but a handset aimed only for the Japanese market.
CNBeta has now leaked an unannounced Sony Xperia P2 that sports similar specs to the Xperia Z4. More specifically, the purported Sony Xperia P2 reportedly comes with the same 5.2-inch full HD display (1920 x 1080 pixels), 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor under the hood, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage capacity, and the same 5.1-megapixel front shooter. At the same time, the Xperia P2 also sports some differences compared to the Xperia Z4, such as a 12.1-megapixel rear camera, a 4,240 mAh battery, and a thicker body.
In other words, the hardware internals of the two smartphones are uncannily similar, but the significantly thicker Xperia P2 will make it impossible to mistake it for the Xperia Z4.
CNBeta makes no mention of when this smartphone will make its official debut, which markets it will reach when it does, or how much it will cost. Sony, for its part, has made no announcement regarding a new Xperia P series smartphone, and it all remains in the rumor state at this point. As always in such cases, it's highly advisable to take all leaks and speculation with a grain of salt until formal confirmation. We'll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as more information comes to light, so stay tuned.
