Following a curious release for the Xperia Z4, Sony is now expected to launch a higher-end Xperia Z5 flagship smartphone later this year.
While other OEMs such as Samsung and HTC took to the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 to unveil their latest flagship smartphones, Sony decided to skip the show and save its Xperia Z4 smartphone for a later date.
The company has officially taken the wraps off its Xperia Z4 recently, but it's not exactly what we were expecting. First of all, the new-generation Xperia Z4 doesn't boast many notable improvements compared to its predecessor, as some specifications remained unchanged from the previous iteration. Secondly, Sony only unveiled its Xperia Z4 for Japan, without making any mention of a global release.
This prompted many to wonder whether the Xperia Z4 was indeed the company's new flagship smartphone for 2015, or it was just an Xperia Z3 refresh for the Japanese market. A few days ago, some information indicated that the Xperia Z4 unveiled in Japan may see a global release as the Xperia Z3+, reflecting the fact that it's not a big upgrade over its predecessor.
Things are getting even more confusing now, as a new leak now claims that a Sony Xperia Z5 flagship may arrive in the fall of this year or early next year. Sony will reportedly focus on design and features with its next-generation flagship, but also on the camera module.
Based on this new report, the Sony Xperia Z5 is expected to rock a premium metallic design, boast a QHD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor under the hood, paired with a hefty 4GB of RAM.
The smartphone is further rumored to feature a 21-megapixel rear camera with a new IMX230 sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS), and also sport a Sense ID fingerprint scanner for extra security.
The image above comes from a gallery of concept renders and shows a concept design of the smartphone, envisioning the Xperia Z5 with a premium build, a thin body and impressively thin bezels around the display. It does not depict the actual product, just what it could potentially look like.
Nothing is official at this point, however, so take this new leak with a hefty grain of salt.
