PS4 Pro's 4K HDR Patches May or May Not Cost Money, It Depends

There have been speculations on the internet for the past few hours that patches for the Sony PS4 Pro for already rolled out game discs to be rendered in 4K will cost money.

However, a Sony representative has informed Polygon that they will not charge their consumers for patches. Despite that being stated, it is still uncertain if 3rd party patches will come at a price or not.

Earlier, Masayasu Ito, executive at Sony Interactive Entertainment, has indicated that those game discs that were already sold and players wish to play them in 4K may require payment for their 4K patches. Though confirmed above that 1st party patches are for free, the 3rd party patches' cost will be up to the providers' decision. When asked about this issue, his exact words were:

"It will be different for each title ...I believe it will depend on the thinking of each licensee."

Ito suggested whether patches are to be charged "will vary" for each of Sony's own titles. When asked about 3rd party publishers about costs, Ito confirmed that it may or may not cost to avail. To quote:

The interviewer later addressed third-party publishers, asking, "What you're saying is that there will be titles that have a fee [for the patch] and [patches for the] titles that are free?"

"That is correct," Ito replied.

It is important to note that the interview was posted in Japanese and it might be possible that some important ideas were kind of lost in translation to English.

When purchasing PS4 Pro, 4K and HDR are 2 of the major changes and advantages players will get. The console was announced days ago on Sept 7 during the PlayStation Meeting and will hit the shelves by November 10. Price will be: $399 / £349 / A$560, featuring more than doubled GPU boost, 1TB hard drive, and an overclocked CPU.

HDR support will be rolled out to all models of the original PS4 via system update by next week. Those who have 1080p TVs with the original PS4 will also enjoy the benefits.
