Google recently proclaimed that Nexus 6P and all its other Nexus devices that are not yet on Project Fi will soon start running a data-saving feature that has remained exclusive to its Fi network, the Wi-Fi Assistant.
This feature is more likely similar to Windows 10's Wi-Fi Sense. It is set to be available to all users of Google Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, Nexus 5X and even the older Nexus 5, moving on from being limited to last year's pair of Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X as well as the Motorola-made Nexus 6, which came in back in 2014.
Confirmed on Google's post in its very own SNS, Google+, the company explained that all Nexus 6P including its siblings who are not yet using Project Fi will be able to save on their cellular data by taking advantage of Wi-Fi Assistant.
This feature allows the device to automatically scan for open Wi-Fi hotspots and connects consumers to the best one available. By this, users can essentially save data pack while enjoying your connection with the free Wi-Fi spots.
There is no need to worry about privacy and security either since Google's Project Fi assures protection via its VPN. The tech giant claims that it does not view or record the content sent over the VPN, it adds that it still looks out for any abuse so as to improve the services.
Wi-Fi Assistant feature is only limited to Google Nexus smartphones that run Android 5.1 Lollipop and above, which means, those who are still using Google Nexus 4, for example, are still among those devices which are included in the update. If you have not seen Wi-Fi Assistant yet on your Nexus 6P, you can go to the Settings > Wi-Fi > Configure and from there, you can enable the "Use open Wi-Fi automatically" option.
