Technology is constantly evolving at a rapid pace, and this year we've already seen some exciting things on several technological fronts. One of the most exciting changes, however, is the Linux-powered devices invading the market and revolutionizing personal computing.
This Linux revolution has come with exciting devices sporting considerable computing power in tiny little packages such as the Raspberry Pi, the Mele 1000, the Cotton Candy, the MK802, and others. Fortunately, there are no signs of trend slowing down. Quite the opposite, two new Linux gadgets have recently surfaced, joining the exciting breed of Linux-powered mini PCs.
The Oval Elephant
One of these two new mini PC devices running on Linux is called the Oval Elephant. It is very similar to the MK802, and costs only $72. It comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but it can also run Linaro Linux.
The tiny gadget has a microSD card slot that can support up to 64GB, as well as a full HDMI port that allows users to connect it directly to a TV or monitor. The Oval Elephant is charged via a microUSB port, and features a built-in MIC and an external port for MIC audio as well.
The mini PC is powered by a single-core 1.5GHz AllWinner A10 Cortex A8 ARM processor, has 1GB of RAM (DDR3 high-capacity), Wi-Fi connectivity, MALI400 graphics processing chip, and 1080p HDMI video output with support for 2160p. Those interested can also buy optional add-ons such as a Lenovo wireless keyboard/mouse, which costs $24.99.
The Mini X
The Mini X was uncovered by Liliputing on Tuesday, July 10. It is a tiny Linux-powered computer using the same AllWinner A10 processor as the Oval Elephant. The Mini X, however, can reportedly run several Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Fedora, and Puppy Linux.
The Mini X also supports both Android 2.3 and Android 4.0 and features 512 DDR3 RAM, 4GB of built-in storage, microSD expansion slot, HDMI port, two USB ports, and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n with an external antenna. It can be easily plugged into a TV, and it also comes with a remote included in the package.
Prices may vary depending on retailer, but generally it should be available under $100. DealExtreme, for instance, sells the Mini X for $77.50, while MiniandTech is currently selling it with a $99 price tag and a one-year warranty. The package includes the wireless remote, as well as an external antenna.
