If Microsoft has managed to gain ground in the rumor mill with its upcoming Xbox 720, Sony has attained an even higher pedestal with reports of both PlayStation 4 and, very recently, the PlayStation 3 ‘Super Slim.’
As per new reports, the PlayStation 3 ‘Super Slim’ (CECH 4000) will not be shown at this year’s GamesCon, as planned, starting on August 14. The news was revealed only recently, after it was reported last week that images of a new PS3 had been leaked online.
The latest information regarding the newly talked about PS3 ‘Super Slim’ was unveiled by sources at VG247. After the unit was revealed via FCC filings, a boatload of images cropped up on the web that elaborated on the type of the console and its features. Now we know that the device will feature a 16GB flash memory and have a top loading disc slot.
According to the schedule, GamesCon commences on August 14 and Sony is expected to show some of its new and upcoming stuff along with a price drop. But now it looks like that’s not going to happen.
However, a reason has been given by their sources for a non-show. This is because of the stock levels being high. The current PlayStation 3 slim has a projected sales target of 12 million this fiscal year, and Sony has actually managed to ship a lot of them.
Sony’s stock clearing is similar to something Microsoft did previously when they shipped the Slim in 2010. However, the PS3 ‘Super Slim’ is rumored to be priced at $179 for the 16 GB model according to sources.
Only previously the rumors of the FCC filing for a new PS3 model surfaced, and it was accompanied by a host of suspected images of the device that were included in a filing with the Brazilian Agency of Telecommunications (Anatal), discovered by Technoblog.
The new images showed quite an interesting device that is designed with a wavy top, fairly curved and a concave front, and oval-shaped bottom. The bottom of the console, which is supposedly expected to act as the stand in some instances, is quite weirdly shaped and you would feel that it doesn’t really fit in with the rest of the console.
The new filing confirmed three new PS3 models – The CECH-4011A, 4011B, and 4011C. The FCC filing leak that happened previously stated that the device sported a CECH-4001x model number, so there should be no queries regarding the console’s legitimacy.
You can check out the images here in our previous report. Stay tuned for more.
