Gather up, Planeteers! For the better part of a month, several studios have tried to get a Captain Planet movie into creation. Warner Bros picked to scrap the project ten years ago, and then Sony tried adapting the character about three years ago, but nothing appeared from them either. Well, now it looks like those Funny or Die! comic starring Don Cheadle won't be the only live action Captain Planet material out there anymore, as Paramount is now taking charge of bringing the green hero to the big screen.
Well, this is a little unanticipated. Word dropped last night etiquette of The Hollywood Reporter that we may be getting a Captain Planet movie. And here I was talking prior this morning about "new to cinema" franchises.

The encouraging fact is that Leonardo DiCaprio making a Captain Planet movie happen is so 'fits like a glove' that it's almost self-satire. It's no secret that the actor/producer has spent many years as a pro-environmentalist. He just screened the climate change factual Before the Flood (National Geographic picked up the rights to that one), and his company is preparing a post-climate change "young adult fantasy franchise" offering in Sandcastle Empire.
So yeah, his qualified. If anyone were going to make Captain Planet as more than just a succumb, it would be Mr. DiCaprio. If Michael Jackson were still alive, he'd probably be in cast as well.
I may go into this different day at reach, but DiCaprio is a huge star in particular because he doesn't play in the elective franchise. He doesn't work all that much, and he makes event films out of the sort of movies (big-scale, adult-skewing prestige fare) that we all claim Hollywood doesn't produce anymore.
I half-joked last year that we required to make sure that he never won an Oscar so that he would still keep making the kinds of films that tend to get Oscar nominee. So if we end up with a Captain Planet movie starring DiCaprio as Captain Planet in a five-star-film franchise, don't say I didn't warn you.
All right, that's enough guessing and sarcasm for one post. Paramount and Leonardo DiCaprio are building up to give us Captain Planet. By the way, have a glance at the list of actors and celebs who imparted their vocals all over the series run. This thing was more built than the first year of Michael Mann's Crime Story and all of Wise Guy combined.
So, will you cry at the end when Leonardo DiCaprio's Captain Planet valiantly dies saving our miserable planet while passing on his powers to the next generation's hero?
