Makoto Shinkai’s Japanese animated film “Your Name” has now reached a new box office record and has surpassed the likes of “Ponyo” and “Avatar”.
Just recently, “Your Name” otherwise known as “Kimi No Na Wa” was reported to have reached 148 million dollars in Japan's box office. Such feat gave it the title as the 11th highest grossing Japanese or overseas film overall. And trailing behind “Ponyo”, “Your Name” was the fifth highest grossing Japanese animated movie.
Now, it has been reported that Makoto Shinkai’s anime film “Your Name” has attained another new record marking a new history for the movie. With a new record of 158 million dollars in the Japanese box office, “Your Name” has now surpassed “Ponyo”, a Studio Ghibli film and even James Cameron’s “Avatar”. It has been in cinemas for weeks now and it has been on the top spot for 9 straight weeks and is now the 9th highest grossing film ever in Japan.
Makoto Shinkai “Your Name” is reportedly the only movie to have earned this much without being produced by Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki. The only films that “Your Name” has not surpassed yet are the successful classics of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki namely “Spirited Away”, “Howl’s Moving Castle”, and “Princess Mononoke”. The Makoto Shinkai movie is even expected to earn 200 million dollars at the rate its box office is going.
Meanwhile, “Your Name” will be released in Southeast Asia, which will be distributed by Purple Plan. “Your Name” will make its debut in Singapore cinemas on Nov. 3 in regular daily screening schedules. The movie is reportedly to release with English and Chinese subtitles. Makoto Shinkai “Your Name” has been released in 85 countries and regions to date as its world premiere took place in an Anime Expo in Los Angeles last July 3.
