Witcher 3's Card Game 'Gwent' Starts Closed Beta, Invites Start Going Out 'In Waves'

CD Projekt Red announced today that the closed beta for Gwent, a collecting card game based from The Witcher 3, has begun. Only a limited number of PC and Xbox One players will have access, as the PS4 beta is scheduled for "later."

According to PCGamer, the first wave of invitations are sent out to players who registered on the official website of Gwent, and those who have not yet registered can still do so. The official twitter account of Gwent said, "Dont worry if you didn't receive one yet! We'll be adding more folks over time."

The Origin Of The Gwent Card Game

Gwen is a mini-game that can be played within The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It is a fast-paced card game about two armies struggling on a battlefield. It is a one-on-one card-based duelling system that requires strategizing, taking risks and delivering combos and magic to win. Cards can be collected by winning matches, buying from vendors in-game or completing quests.

The announcement of Gwent's standalone version was given during the release of the final DLC of The Witcher 3, Blood and Wine.

Closed Beta Information

Gwent will run until spring 2017 and will only have a multiplayer mode, according to the closed beta FAQ. However, the full release of the game will include "a fully featured single-player adventure."

"We have only one goal with the entire beta and that's to make Gwent as fun an experience as possible," the developers said. "We'll come out of beta when we have a game we think is honest, fun, and well-balanced."

According to the FAQ, Gwent will be much more than the card game in The Witchers 3. They started beta tests since the game will include PvP modes, card art, card voice-overs and skills.

On a final note, CD Projekt senior community coordinator Marcin Momot expressed his own thoughts about the game. "Gwent is an example of how the community can have aactual impact on game developers," he said. "What we created as a part of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is now, because of your involvement, a standalone game and a totally different experience that firmly stands on its own."
