‘Criminal Minds' Season 12 Rumors: What's Next For Hotch After His Resignation? Could Fans Still See Thomas Gibson In Season 13?

After a couple of weeks believing that Hotch was sent on a special mission, it was finally revealed on "Criminal Minds" season 12 last week that the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) chief tendered his resignation. What's next for Hotch after his departure? Could fans still see portrayer Thomas Gibson in season 13?

What's Next For Hotch?

It was revealed to loyal fans during the airing of "Criminal Minds" season 12, episode 6 titled "Elliot's Pond" last week that Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner resigned from BAU. This is in contrast to what viewers were initially made to believe that the character was given a sensitive assignment. Rossi (Joe Mantegna) told BAU staff that Hotch entered witness protection following the persistent stalking of serial Peter "Mr. Scratch" Lewis (Bodhi Elfman) to his son Jack.

This plot somehow reflects Gibson's stance over his family in real life. In a previous interview, Gibson expressed to the press that he is taking time with his family following his departure from the long-running series. On Twitter, the 57-year-old actor posted a tweet saying: "The outpouring love and support is amazing and much appreciated by my family and me. Thanks to all! #bestfansintheworld #ThankfulThursday."

Could Fans Still See Thomas Gibson In Season 13?

Since Gibson left off his character in episode 2 titled "Sick Day" last Oct. 5, there have been speculations that the character would come back anytime soon because he never died after all. After being dismissed following a physical altercation with executive producer Virgil Williams, Gibson was able to muster up the overwhelming support of his huge fan base that started a campaign on Twitter #NoHotchNoWatch.

The hanging question is if fans could see Thomas Gibson in season 13. From the point of view of Williams, he previously told People that he does not intend to work with the actor in the future. This sparked speculations that there could no longer be Gibson comeback next season.

"Criminal Minds" season 12 airs Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on CBS.
