Want a pair of the ultra-sci-fi, ultra-cool Google Glasses? Now you can get your own far earlier than everyone else.
It'll only cost you a little less than $16,000.
"A brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item in its original packaging (where packaging is applicable)" is on sale until Thursday, Feb. 28 (12:44:07 p.m. PST) through online auction site eBay.
Classified on eBay by the seller as "new," the site assures that the item is wrapped in "[p]ackaging [that] should be the same as what is found in a retail store, unless the item is handmade or was packaged by the manufacturer in non-retail packaging, such as an unprinted box or plastic bag."
Google Glass will not be available to the public — and even then for an alleged $1,500 a pair — until at least 2013. Google VIPs have been seen testing out the product, of course, and "select individuals" are being chosen for the Google Glass Explorer program as discussed recently by NBC News.
How did someone get his or her grubby hands on a pair of the hottest product of the decade? The seller has left a rather suspicious message on the eBay page with some possible clues.
"i [sic] am selling a pair of Google Glasses (Project Glass glasses). I've been selected as an early adapter for Google's upcoming release," writes seller bla7kcat who has a feedback score of "42" and has otherwise received "100%" positive feedback on eBay.
"you [sic] are buying a brand new unopened pair of Google's Project Glass glasses," bla7kcat confirms for anyone who's not sure that he's about to spend enough money to buy a car on a pair of computer-powered glasses and didn't read the note the first time it was written out.
"i [sic] will be personally attending and picking up my pair in either Los Angeles, or New York at Google's Project Glass launch event, which will take place some time after Feburary 27th."
Now therein lies the rub. A deadline for the Google Glass Explorer contest was set for Wednesday, Feb. 27, but no real mention of an "event," which will take place "some time" after that. Unless bl7kcat is speaking here of the pickup of his/her Glass, a winner (somehow already?) of the aforementioned Explorer program?
The seller goes on to state that s/he will spend $1,500 on his/her glasses (which all Explorers must do), and that's "obviously" where s/he started the bidding. By 10:10 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Feb. 27, there were already 36 bidders, bringing the cost of the glasses to $15,900.
The buyer will be able to choose the color of the glasses, according to bla7kcat, who seems from the poorly written description to be more interested in selling the item than in actually using it for himself/herself.
Apparently, trying to immediately flip it is what s/he would do "If I Had Glass" (the question asked of all would-be Explorers).
